Acupuncture

What should I do before coming in for my appointment?

After you make an appointment with us, rest assured that you’ll be in good hands. We recommend that you don’t skip meals and avoid consumption of coffee or alcohol before your Acupuncture appointment. If you are scheduled to have a Cupping or Scrubbing treatment, please bring a lightweight scarf or jacket for after the treatments.

How long is each session?

Initial consultation may take about 20-30 minutes whereas follow-up consultation takes about 10-20 minutes. Our practitioner will prescribe and perform a treatment(s) best suitable for you after the consultation. Acupuncture treatment takes approximately 30 minutes after the needles get placed, and you can take the time for a rest or sleep!

Does acupuncture hurt?

It is normal to feel a little sensation from the needles, such as tingling, warmth, dull aches or muscle twitches, though a lot of the time there’s not so much feeling that you wouldn’t even notice they’re in.

How quickly should I expect the result?

The body’s response time varies depending on the condition and the individual. In some cases, you may notice immediate improvement after treatment, while in others, it may take several sessions to experience the cumulative effect.

Can I go exercise after the session?

It’s perfectly fine to carry on with your activities after acupuncture sessions. It is not unusual to feel a slight sense of tiredness especially after the initial treatment. This is because acupuncture stimulates the body’s energy, similar to a workout. If you experience this tiredness, we suggest taking it easy and resting. Consider it as having already completed your daily exercise routine!

How often should I do acupuncture?

As acupuncture works cumulatively, it is advised to undergo a course of 5 to 10 regularly scheduled treatments in order to fully benefit from the therapy. However, for acute situations like the common cold or mild joint sprains, it may provide immediate relief with just a couple of sessions. In other cases, additional treatments may be required. The frequency of sessions will vary depending on the severity and nature of the condition, ranging from daily to once a month.

Who should not get acupuncture?

Acupuncture is good for preventative health, you don’t have to have a particular health concern to get it. However, people who have uncontrolled movements, such as acute epilepsy, or in need of emergency medical treatments or surgeries are not suitable to get acupuncture. Children under 16 years old will need to be supervised during the treatment.

Are there any adverse reactions from acupuncture treatment?

Severe reactions are extremetly rare. Occasionally, people may experience temporary feelings of fatigue, light-headedness, headaches or mild body aches. Temparory skin reactions such as bruising, redness or lumps at specific points of needle insertion is also considered normal. However, if you have any concerns, please report to your Chinese Medicine acupuncturist.

Is acupuncture covered by Medicare?
